Episode #117 First up, it’s the Unfunny But Totally Real Headlines! Learn about the world, while sitting on your ass, and feel like you’re actually doing something. It’s only two minutes, and then you can sound smart to your apathetic hipster douche bag friends!

Allison starts feuds with the media elite on Twitter, and for some reason, they care what she thinks. Also, she briefly recaps the latest BP news, but for all the updates, check out her blog at http://allisonkilkenny.com.

A Norfolk, Virginia elementary principal was placed on administrative leave this week as school officials investigated why life like, 4-inch-long plastic fetus dolls were given to dozens of students. (http://www.142throckmortontheatre.com/event.php?eventid=673)

Anti-choice activists are trying to appropriate the feminism movement with something called Feminists for Life, which is exactly like real feminism, without all that “women determining the fates of their own bodies” business. (http: //newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/panelists/colleen_ carroll_campbell/2010/05/pro-life_feminism_is_the_future.html? hpid=talkbox1)

Then, it’s time for Listener Mail! Your questions/comments this week concern the War on Drugs, race, uniting the Progressive movement, and Libertarianism.

Texas (not Austin) is still crazy. In a landmark vote that will shape the future education of millions of Texas schoolchildren, the State Board of Education on Friday approved new curriculum standards for U.S. history and other social studies courses that reflect a more conservative tone than in the past. Students will have to study a list of influential musical and cultural movements in America that includes rock 'n' roll, Tin Pan Alley, country music and the Beat generation. Social conservatives beat back an effort to include hip-hop music after some members complained that its “often-crude lyrics are inappropriate for students.” (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/texassouthwest/stories/052110dnedusboeupdate.2671ec55.html)

This latest decision by the Texas board to erase black people from history mirrors Arizona’s decision to ban an ethnic studies program. (http://articles.latimes.com/2010/may/12/nation/la-na-ethnic-studies-20100512)

Finally, it’s time for the One-Minute Fuck Yous! Allison tears into family values hypocrite Mark Souder, who had to resign after admitting her had an affair with a female staffer. Afterwards, Jamie tees off on Twitter.

Episode #116

First up, it’s the Unfunny But Totally Real Headlines! Learn about the world, while sitting on your ass, and feel like you’re actually doing something. It’s only two minutes, and then you can sound smart to your apathetic hipster douche bag friends!

Next, Allison and Jamie discuss Rand Paul, his crazy Libertarian beliefs, like how he thinks the Civil Rights Act violates the rights of private businesses (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/20/rand-paul-not-too-crazy-for-william-kristol/), and the legacy of his father, Ron Paul.

It’s time for Listener Mail! Your questions/comments this week concern the depiction of the Democratic Party as the Party Of Hollywood, and being an activist in one’s own community, featuring the Commenter Of The Week, Brooke, who is an amazing person doing amazing things like growing her own food in the Urban Homestead Project.

Brooke also offers interesting insight into the rationalization of an apathetic hipster douche bag. Maybe they’re not asshole. Maybe they’re scared.

White domestic terrorists have slipped off the national media’s radar (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/19/white-domestic-terrorists-slip-off-medias-radar/). White supremacists have recently attacked a black government employee, and have blown up a Muslim mosque, and yet the media hasn’t taken an interest in the assaults on minority victims.

Then, it’s time for the One-Minute Fuck Yous! Allison tees off on Rand Paul, while Jamie focuses his rage on a L.A. agent he met this week.

Episode #115

Citizen Radio spends the hour with comedian W. Kamau Bell (http://www.wkamaubell.com/ ), who is called the “most important guy doing comedy…He’s going to be a legend in his own lifetime like Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce,” by Margaret Cho.

Kamau’s solo show “The W. Kamau Bell Curve” is playing at the Solonova Arts Festival (PS 122, 150 1st Ave @ 9th St) May 20 (9PM) and May 22 (4PM). He will also be the featured comic at Citizen Radio Live! May 24t” Get tickets here: http://www.terranovacollective.org.

Topics of discussion include some big Supreme Court decisions, including rulings that state teenagers may not be imprisoned for life without parole if they haven’t killed anyone, and in a separate ruling, federal government can continue to jail sex offenders even after their prison terms have ended if they’re deemed to be “sexually dangerous.” Allison asks, what’s the point of sentencing terms if they can be arbitrarily thrown out?

Additionally, America’s obsession with sex offenders –and treating even alleged sex offenders as condemned criminals – and an unending quest for total safety have resulted in a factory court system where the accused are immediately condemned via media witch hunt. Just because the media, or the government, accuse a person of being guilty of a crime doesn’t mean the accused is actually guilty. That’s why trials exist.

Next, the ridiculous circus surrounding the new Miss USA, Rima Fakih, a Lebanese-American. The Right has hijacked the story, accusing Fakih of being an affirmative action pick, and also accusing Fakih of having ties to Hezbollah.

Police gunned down Aiyana Jones, a 7-year-old Detroit girl, in her own home during a botched raid. Now, the attorney for the family is saying there is video evidence contradicting the police’s official story. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100517/ap_on_re_us/us_police_search_girl_killed) There is a clear racial bias in the media where stories about botched drug raids like in Missouri (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/06/disturbing-video-of-swat-raid-on-missouri-family/ ) are covered extensively, while stories like the Detroit raid are seen as inevitable by product of living in the ghetto.

Episode #114

First up, it’s the Unfunny But Totally Real Headlines! Learn about the world, while sitting on your ass, and feel like you’re actually doing something. It’s only two minutes, and then you can sound smart to your apathetic hipster douche bag friends!

Then, it’s the debut of Citizen Radio trivia! Jamie asks the audience some questions for prizes, and Allison demonstrates how super awesome she is at trivia.

Jamie explains how some people have voted to elect war criminals. Ilario Pantano won the Republican nomination in North Carolina’s 7th District. Pantano is a veteran who previously fought in the Gulf War, and who killed two unarmed Iraqi detainees, and then placed a sign over the corpses featuring the Marine’s slogan “No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy” as a message to the local population. Then there’s retired Lt. Col Allen West, who is running in Florida’s 22nd Distict, who admitted to apprehending an Iraqi policeman he suspected of planning an ambush, watching as his troops beat him, and then firing a gunshot by the Iraqi’s head in order to scare him into divulging information. The policeman in question later told The New York Times that he had no knowledge of any attacks. (http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-05-13/renegade-soldiers-for-congress/full/ )

Allison and Jamie discuss the Supreme Court, Kagan, and the death of the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant dominated court. Even though Kagan is a woman, and a Jew, doesn’t mean she’s the next roaring liberal.

It’s time for Listener Mail! Your questions/comments this week involve favorite comedians, how to talk to Conservative classmates, and getting started with veganism.

BP is still being awful. Allison has been writing about the oil geyser catastrophe all week: On the 300,000 gallons of chemical dispersants BP is pouring into the ocean (http: //trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/11/bp-pours-300000- gallons-of-chemical-dispersants-into-ocean-to-break-up-oil/ ), on criminal negligence and victim manipulation (http: //trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/13/bp-transocean- accused-of-criminal-negligence-and-victim-manipulation/ ), and on BP trying to get Canadian legislators to adopt deregulation after the Gulf spill (http: //trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/13/fresh-from-gulf- disaster-bp-urges-canadian-legislators-to-drop-regulations/ ).

It looks like President Obama is going to push back the withdrawal date in Iraq. Jamie wonders aloud what Obama has to do before Progressives realize he’s not on their side.

Last, it’s time for the One-Minute Fuck Yous! Allison tees off on clueless racist, Pat Buchanan, and Jamie yells at his local gas company for making poor people turn against each other.

Episode #113

Allison and Jamie discuss the video of a Missouri SWAT team storming into a family’s house in the middle of the night, shooting the family dog, terrifying a child, all in the name of a little bit of marijuana. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/06/disturbing-video-of-swat-raid-on-missouri-family/) Follow-up here:http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/07/confusing-details-emerge-about-missouri-swat-team-warrant/.

Citizen Radio plays the audio from that video and then discusses the militarization of the police, the failed War on Drugs, the police state, and tasers, specifically the mob orgy reaction to a kid getting tased at a Philadelphia baseball game.

It’s the debut of a new segment: What’s Pissing You Off? The very first participant is comic and Fox News saboteur, Lee Camp (http://leecamp.net), who chose the topic of the BP oil spill.

Then, it’s time for the One-Minute Fuck Yous! Jamie rails against UK voters, and Allison yells at Missouri police officers.

In the second half of the show, Allison interviews Yanis Varoufakis, professor of Economic Theory and Director of the Department of Political Economy within the University of Athens, about the Greek economic crisis.

Varoufakis discusses the riots, class inequality, the parallels between Greek and U.S. workers, and the $30 billion IMF loans that come with a price tag of wage cuts and tax hikes on poor workers. He stresses that this is not a bailout of Greece. It’s a bailout of European banks. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/10/it’s-not-a-bailout-for-greece-it’s-a-bailout-for-european-banks/)

Varoufakis also discusses the foreign media’s depiction of the Greek people as lazy, and his fear that the propaganda will stoke anti-Greek sentiments, and also create paranoia and hatred within Greece.

Episode #109

Citizen Radio debuts a new song from political hip hop geniuses, Blue Scholars. Comedian Myq Kaplan stops by to talk about comedy, politics, and veganism.

It’s the debut of a brand new song from political hip hop geniuses – and future guests of Citizen Radio – Blue Scholars! http://bluescholars.com/blog/. Their song “Joe Arpaoi” is all about Arizona’s favorite crazy, human rights-violating sheriff.

Congratulations to all May Day immigration reform rally activists! Over a million of you took to the streets to protest for comprehensive immigration reform, and also to oppose Arizona’s insane bill. Special thanks to those of you who posted photos from your local events on Citizen Radio’s Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=69102745571&ref=ts.

Also, it’s time for Listener Mail! The question in this episode concerns Alex Jones and conspiracy theorists, and vegan athletes.

Allison interviews Stoned Jesus about his slacking, which usually results in human and environmental disasters, like the Louisiana oil spill.

Comedian Myq Kaplan (http://myqkaplan.com/) stops by to talk about comedy, his new CD, Vegan Mind Meld (http://myqkaplan.com/?page_id=52), and how to be political and vegan in comedy without the audience hating you.
