Citizen Radio

Episode #78

On this Wednesday's Citizen Radio...

Listeners have nominated Citizen Radio for the Presidential Citizens Medal. Other listeners who would like to nominate CR can do so here:http://www.whitehouse.gov/citizensmedal. Allison and Jamie promise to have the best acceptance speech ever if they win.

After spending the week in Chicago and feasting on mainstream media, Jamie discusses what the TV taught him (particularly about Jersey Shore,) while Allison contrasts those stories with print and independent blog news.

Marine Sgt. Charles Dyer, who played a prominent role in the Tea Party movement, and who has been involved in organizing militia "maneuvers" in Oklahoma, has been arrested for allegedly raping a 7-year-old girl.

Citizen Radio presents a new segment: Fuck You, David Cameron! in which Jamie lists a horrifying fact about the UK’s Conservative Party leader.

As international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to Haiti's earthquake victims, a U.S. faith-based group is sending Bibles to Haitians in their hour of need.

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, has compared giving people government assistance to “feeding stray animals.” (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/01/24/gop-candidate-people-on-public-assistance-like-stray-animals/).

Jamie talks about how cognitive dissonance is behind why politicians (and voters) keep repeating (and defending) the same mistakes.

David Axelrod, chief advisor to President Obama, defended FBI agents’ behavior while interrogating Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the man the FBI waterboarded over 183 times. (http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2009/04/18/khalid-sheikh-mohammed-was-waterboarded-183-times-in-one-month/) Jamie responds – angrily.

By a 68-27 margin, voters in last Tuesday's election supported the universal health care law in Massachusetts; this included a majority of Scott Brown voters!

Rep. Paul Hodes, D-N.H, said on ABC’s “Top Line” today that Democrats still need to pass a health care bill -- and to convince the public that it’s critical to job growth. Allison explains why this is a very good idea.

Episode #77

On this weekend’s Citizen Radio…

Martha Coakley concedes the Massachusetts Senate (and Ted Kennedy’s old) seat to Scott Brown. Citizen Radio talks about what this means, how this happened, and Brown’s nude centerfold spread in Cosmopolitan magazine.

The mainstream media has already decided what the Brown win means: Liberalism is dead. Citizen Radio disagrees.

Jamie talks about David Cameron and Gordon Brown, and why voting for Cameron is George W. Bush Part II.

Next, Jamie and Allison discuss how some US military weapons are inscribed with secret “Jesus” Bible Codes: http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=9575794

Citizen Radio talks about “drone porn,” the new Youtube phenomenon, and how technology has disconnected human beings from the terrible consequences of war:http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/01/20/drone-porn-hits-youtube/

Episode #76

On this Wednesday's Citizen Radio...

Jamie returns from San Francisco where he secured some badass upcoming guests for Citizen Radio: Comic Paul F. Tompkins and Robin Williams, the newest members of the Church Of The Smiling Vagina (COSV)!

At the Nashville Teabagger Convention in February, Sarah Palin will be joined on stage by numerous religious authoritarians. One of them is Judge Roy Moore, a former chief justice from Alabama who has openly advocated killing gay people. It’s like Uganda, but in the USA! (http://santitafarella.wordpress.com/2010/01/13/judge-roy-moore-anti-gay-bigot-and-a-speaker-with-sarah-palin-at-the-upcoming-teabagger-convention/)

Next, Allison discusses Don McLeroy, the creationist who sits on the Texas State Board of Education, and who calls evolution “hooey.” McLeroy is one of the leaders of an activist bloc that aims to rehabilitate Joseph McCarthy, bring global-warming denial into science class, and downplay the contributions of the civil rights movement. Read the whole amazing thing here:http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2010/1001.blake.html

Pastor Rick Scarborough and Vision America are recruiting pastors for political purposes. Allison asks: doesn’t this violate the separation of church and state?

This week, Allison attended the Bail Out The People march on Wall Street. Listen to the clips from the protest along with interviews. The event was organized last minute in hopes of combining the group’s usual message (moratorium on foreclosures, the return of lavish bonuses, etc.) with a rally for the victims in Haiti, and against proposed MTA cuts that are aimed at taking away free MTA cards from students. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/01/16/bail-out-people-activists-demand-wall-street-bonuses-go-to-haiti/)

Finally, Allison interviews Michael Anthony, author of Mass Casualties (http://www.masscasualties.com/). Anthony was an Operating Room Medic in Iraq, and joins Citizen Radio to talk about the widespread corruption he witnessed in the military.

Episode #75

On this weekend’s Citizen Radio, Allison and Jamie discuss the tragic events in Haiti, and how the media is portraying Haiti as land of a million poor black people where bad shit constantly goes down. What isn’t being reported is that US debt policies left Haiti vulnerable to catastrophe (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/01/13/us-debt-policies-left-haiti-vulnerable-to-catastrophe/).

If you can spare it, please help Haitians and make donations to UNICEF (https://secure.unicefusa.org/site/Donation2?df_id=6680&6680.donation=form1) and The Red Cross (https://american.redcross.org/site/Donation2?4306.donation=form1&idb=428732091&df_id=4306&JServSessionIdr004=yxa9a0v901.app194a)

And speaking of our stupid media, there may be illegal wars and bailouts happening right now, but Mark McGwire has shrunken balls!http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/01/12/illegal-war-and-bailouts-aside-that-guy-is-on-steroids/

This episode features the debut of a new game: “Citizen Radio BANISHES Another Listener!,” news about daddy’s boy, Harold Ford, Jr., Obama condoms, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s destruction of California, the eighth largest economy in the world. Schwarzenegger’s newest genius policy ideas consist of forcing 200,000 children off low-cost medical insurance, ending in-home care for 350,000 infirm and elderly citizens and slashing income assistance to hundreds of thousands more.

Next, there are some disturbing updates in the George Tiller murder trial, including the judge allowing Tiller’s murderer to claim his act was justified “on moral grounds,” which is essentially Al-Qaeda’s argument, as well.

Episode #74

First up, Allison and Jamie discuss Vagina Politics, and how all societies fight to regulate the supply of vaginas.

Special guest: Sara Benincasa (http://www.sarabenincasa.com/,) a comedian, writer, and radio talk show host. She’s famous for her Sarah Palin impersonation, and during the election, she created original web video content for the Huffington Post's humor site, 23/6, a series for which she won an ECNY Award and was nominated for a Webby for best performance, alongside Isabella Rosellini.

We plan on having Sara back on the show, so if any of you have relationship, feminism, political, or sex questions, send them to Citizen Radio, and Sara will answer them! She’s very insightful and super smart on all these topics, so ask anything you want. You can remain anonymous if you want.

Stephen Harper, Canada’s Prime Minister, shut down Parliament. Seriously. In a democracy. Jamie and Allison talk about our Friendly Neighbor To The North’s terrifying moment of authoritarianism.

Also, Iceland refuses to repay Britain’s multi-billion dollar loans. President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson has refused to sign a bill authorizing the payout to Britain and the Netherlands.

In Afghanistan, US-led troops are accused of dragging innocent children from their beds and shooting them during a nighttime raid. Afghan government investigators said the eight students’ ages ranged from eleven to seventeen.

Finally, some good news! Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is kicking Big Business’s ass. The AP reports, “Solis made a splash in October when OSHA slapped the largest fine in its history on oil giant BP PLC for failing to fix safety problems after a 2005 explosion at its Texas City refinery.”

Episode #71

Happy 2010 from Citizen Radio!

Allison and Jamie read some fan/hate mail. Yes, sometimes they can be both.

Next, Allison explains why torture is more offensive than profane language.

Citizen Radio discusses Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab AKA “The Underwear Bomber,” and the myths Republicans and the media have created about President Obama’s response to the failed terrorist attack, and national security.

The myths list, originally posted by Juan Cole, can be found here:http://www.juancole.com/2009/12/top-republican-myths-about-crotch.html:

1. President Obama did not speak publicly swiftly enough. In fact, Bush was silent for 9 days after the shoe bomber attack in 2001.

2. Bush would have tried Abdulmutallab as an enemy combatant. Well, he tried Richard Reid the shoe bomber in civilian courts.

3. Yemen is the issue. In fact, Yemen's government is actively bombing al-Qaeda cells, and complains that the US never shared its info on Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab with Sanaa.

4. A US war on al-Qaeda in Yemen is next. This way of thinking is foolish. Yemen is not a cake walk, folks

Joe “I’m Wrong About Everything” Lieberman now wants the US to bomb Yeme. Citizen Radio explains why everyone should probably stop listening to Joe.

Allison and Jamie offer some helpful tips on how to improve the media, and specifically, Meet The Press.

Huffington Post and filmmaker Eugene Jarecki are encouraging citizens to withdraw their money from big banks like Bank of America, and move their funds into smaller community banks. Check out the details here: http://moveyourmoney.info/

Finally, John Yoo, one of the key architects of the Bush era “torture memos,” recently got to plug his book in NY Times Magazine. He’s also still teaching law at Berkley. Seriously. Allison writes all about it here:http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2009/12/30/john-yoo-no-regrets/
