Citizen Radio

Episode #106

Allison and Jamie give updates on Operation Interview Obama. As always, Twitter users, please Tweet the general spirit of the following message (though feel free to put your own, creative, and funny spin on it, while remembering to remain respectful and polite):

Tell President Obama to remember his base, and to say YES to Q&A with #CitizenRadio. #OandCR @BarackObama @whitehouse @PressSec

It’s now legal in Arizona for the police to harass anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant, and they can arrest anyone who is not carrying around their birth certificate. In addition to this neo-fascist policy, militias are springing up in Arizona, including Bill Davis’s Cochise County Militia, which now aims to form a private military company. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/04/24/anti-immigrant-border-watch-group-to-form-‘private-military-company’/)

Next, Citizen Radio debuts a commercial from their very first sponsor!
Allison and Jamie read some listener mail! Your emails this week include questions and comments about starting atheist clubs, the emotional state of the United States, and Big Government versus Small Government. If you have something you want to ask/tell Citizen Radio, visit http://wearecitizenradio.com, and fill out the mail form!
South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are in a little bit of a pickle. Allison and Jamie explain why they’re right, religious extremists are douches, and Comedy Central executives are a pack of cowards.

And finally, it’s time for the triumphant return of the ONE-MINUTE FUCK YOUS!

Episode #105

Operation Interview Obama continues! Twitter users, please Tweet the following message (often, and feel free to put your own, unique spin on the message):

Tell President Obama to remember his base, and to say YES to Q&A with #CitizenRadio. #OandCR @BarackObama @whitehouse @PressSec

Jamie returns from Washington D.C. where he performed for godless atheists and high people across the hall from an event starring anti-choice politician, Bob Casey.

Jamie appears in a new book by Paul Provenza and Dan Dion, “¡Satiristas!” featuring wonderful interviews with Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Lewis Black, George Carlin, Conan O'Brien, Robin Williams, Richard Lewis, Roseanne Barr, and more. The book is available for pre-order here, and comes out May 11 (http://www.amazon.com/Satiristas-Comedians-Contrarians-Raconteurs-Vulgarians/dp/0061859346).

Comcast has joined forces with the Tea Party movement in the form of “Right Network,” a television/web/phone venture that hopes to “entertain, engage, and enlighten Americans who are looking for content that reflects and reinforces their perspective and worldview.” Comcast now denies the partnership. Allison and Jamie explain the danger of such a union, and also why Conservatives aren’t funny. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/04/18/right-network-pro-america-pro-business-pro-military-sensibilities/)

Now that Comcast has denied the partnership with Right Network, Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz says the liberal blogs should be embarrassed. Allison asks: Why? (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/04/20/howard-kurtz-misses-the-point-of-rightnetwork-story/)

Allison made the mistake of watching Morning Joe on MSNBC while Jamie was away. The panel was charged with discussing Mexican drug cartel violence, but decided to do so without mentioning drug decriminalization once. Allison explains why that’s insane. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/04/21/honestly-discussing-mexicos-drug-violence-and-the-failed-war-on-drugs/)

Then, it’s time for Listener Mail! Your questions/comments this week involve liberals smoking and taking drugs, how Jamie may have destroyed a burgeoning romance, but strengthened a relationship between father and daughter, and recommended reading for those of you who are new to politics.

Episode #104

The Obama administration has finally decided to stop looking “forward, and not backward” and hold someone accountable for wiretapping! Unfortunately, it’s the NSA whistleblower, Thomas Drake. (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/15/prosecutions)

Citizen Radio discusses the complete lack of accountability for illegal wars, torture, and wiretapping, including the revelation that a CIA official said, "[T]he heat from destroying [the torture tapes] is nothing compared to what it would be if the tapes ever got into the public domain.” (http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2010/04/quote-9.html)

Goldman Sachs has finally been accused of securities fraud, and has been accused of creating and selling a mortgage investment that was secretly intended to fail. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/17/business/17goldman.html)
Allison interviews Drunken Uganda, Jimmy Chucklenuts (and Ricky The Racist Rhinoceros), and Rod Blagojevich – at the same time! This makes Jamie tired, for some reason.

Then, it’s time for LISTENER MAIL! Your comments/questions this week involve infiltrating young Republican clubs and a new court ruling that allows students to carry guns on college campuses.

Finally, Citizen Radio has a very exciting, very exclusive interview with RUSH LIMBAUGH! (kind of). Rush promised to leave the country if health care reform passed, so now that health care reform has passed, Allison and Jamie want to help him find a new country to relocate to. (http://ihatecomedy.com)

Upcoming guests: Joe Rogan, Alice Walker, Norman Finkelstein, Ralph Nader, and MORE!

Turns out, Conservative judges are activist judges, too. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/14/opinion/14stone.html?partner=rss&emc=rss)

Nebraska has enacted new abortion restrictions, including prohibiting abortions performed after 20 weeks except when the woman is at risk of death or serious physical impairment, and also strenuous mental exams. (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hLr6BEF0oin0qRHdjwmQfrcW-e8A)

Citizen Radio's special guest is comedian Russell Kane! Russell is an English writer and comedian, actor, who was nominated for an if.comedy award at the Edinburgh Fringe (think: the Oscars of comedy).

Russell talks about his escape from the world of advertising, comedy, how Allison covers her laptop webcam with ducktape (and why that's NOT crazy), artistic sacrifice, and the complex education debate.

Allison, Jamie, and Russell brainstorm about ways to improve the educational system without leaving special needs students behind.

Episode #102

David Brooks thinks the rich work harder than the poor, and also, President Obama “throws like a Democrat.”

Employers are now checking applicants’ credit scores during the hiring process. This practice, combined with a corporate culture of slave labor (unpaid internships and part-time employees), and a reversal of Progressive achievements have created a permanent underclass (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/04/10/hiring-practices-preserve-americas-permanent-underclass/).

Then, it’s time for LISTENER MAIL! Your questions this week involve why Citizen Radio is so awesome, tanning, journalism, and abandoning the mainstream.
Allison and Jamie thank “The Givers”, which is what right-wing radio host, Laura Ingraham, calls the rich.

CNN plans to broadcast a documentary called IOUSA, created by billionaire Pete Peterson, who wants to dismantle Social Security. CNN has not invited any pro-Social Security advocate onto this program to balance this conservative propaganda. Tell CNN to stop airing deficit propaganda here: http://action.ourfuture.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=84.

OLC nominee, Dawn Johnsen, has officially withdrawn her nomination. Johnsen was one of the only voices in the wilderness who wanted to hold the Bush administration accountable for its crimes. However, now that the Obama administration is continuing the Bush regime’s behavior, Johnsen is a threat to business as usual, and she was quickly disposed of.

Supreme Court Justice Stevens is retiring, and the frontrunner to replace him, Elena Kagan, would radically shift the court to the right. (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/09/stevens)

Episode #101

The whistleblower website WikiLeaks has posted a graphic video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYTxuW2vmzk) of a US army assault in Baghdad in 2007 that left 12 people dead, including two Reuters news agency employees. Citizen Radio discusses the importance of whistleblowers, the military’s cover-up of war crimes, CNN’s editing of the WikiLeaks footage, and the Pentagon’s claim that it has “lost the tapes” showing the 2007 tragedy.

Next, it’s time for some sweetass LISTENER MAIL! Your questions/comments this week involve Chuck Norris, vegetarianism, the origins of Citizen Radio, and how to handle global warming denialists.

The city of Baltimore requires that a "limited-service pregnancy center" post an easily readable sign, written in English and Spanish, stating that the center does not provide or make referrals for abortion or birth-control services. A center failing to comply within 10 days of being cited could be fined up to $150 a day. Seems simple/logical enough, which is probably why the Catholic Diocese of Baltimore is suing the city, claiming oppression because they are asked to be clear in the range of services they will offer. (http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/bal-md.ci.pregnancy30mar30,0,4172720.story)

PZ Myers points out that one would think Catholics would be proud to publicly state their anti-choice sentiments (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2010/04/but_youd_think_theyd_be_proud.php).

The governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, wants to proclaim April “Confederate History Month,” and somehow doesn’t understand why people, who remember slavery, are upset. (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/virginiapolitics/2010/04/post_666.html?hpid=topnews)

Episode #100

Citizen Radio has changed its logo from, "Thinking Critically Even When It's Your Guy In The White House," to "DIY Radio Broadcasting From The People's Republic Of The Internet". Jamie and Allison explain why they made the change.

The burden of the Employer-Employee relationship increasingly falls exclusively on the Employee. Fortune 500 companies like Wal-Mart have now hired a company, Talx, to rob employees of their unemployment benefits. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/04/04/corporations-find-another-way-to-break-the-poor-by-fighting-unemployment-claims/)

Next, Jamie explains his theory that America's system of credit and debt has created political apathy.

Citizen Radio discusses "The New Jim Crow," a wonderful book by author, and future Citizen Radio guest, Michelle Alexander.http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04022010/watch.html. The War On Drugs has created a permanent, disenfranchised class of young (mostly black) men.

Former Chief Speechwriter and Deputy Policy Director for Rudy Giuliani's 2008 Presidential Campaign John Avlon compared the attempted citizen's arrest of Karl Rove by Code Pink to the Hutaree militia planning to attack and kill law enforcement officers and their families. (http://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/cspanjunkie/avlon-compares-citizens-arrest-karl-ro)

Jamie compares the FBI's handling of the Hutaree militia to the FBI killing of a Detroit Imam (http://www.democracynow.org/2010/4/2/justice_dept_probes_fbi_killing_of).

Episode #99

Citizen Radio discusses Mike McConnell, the Washington Post, the dangers of sleazy corporatism (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/03/29/mcconnell) , and the war on WikiLeaks (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/03/27/wikileaks/index.html).

Blanche Lincoln is fighting to revise history and pretend she was an advocate for health care reform all along (http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/oh-blanche.html).

Next, an investigation into leaked emails by British climate scientists (known as “Climategate”) that appeared to indicate a conspiracy to manipulate data to bolster a case for global warming has cleared the scientists of wrongdoing.

The Washington Post calls the report “mixed,” and Allison explains why that’s wrong.
President Obama has reversed a ban on oil drilling off most U.S. shores. There’s speculation that Obama did this to gain Republican support, which worked awesomely during the health care debate.

According to a recent USA Today poll, more Americans blame Democrats more than any other group for inciting the violence and vandalism post-health care reform.
Allison explains “asset forfeitures.” Though the US legal mantra has traditionally been innocent until proven guilty, asset forfeitures turn that concept on its head, leaving the accused guilty until they have proven themselves innocent. Basically, it’s legalized stealing with cops playing the role of robbers. (http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/03/31/asset-seizures-an-industry-of-legalized-stealing/)
