Citizen Radio

Episode #60

Happy Thanksgiving! Some family reunion advice: Don't stab your Conservative family members with a fork!
The University of California student riots
Congress debates debating the health care bill
Christians are still crazy
A liberal writes Citizen Radio hate mail – over the use of the word "crazy." Seriously.
Allison and Jamie start their own religion. Trust us, you’ll like this one.

Allison interviews Robert Samuels, the president of the University of California, American Federation of Teachers, and blogger at Changing Universities, about the protests. Students are protesting a 32 percent increase in student fees, and also a 15 percent midyear tuition hike (it's still unclear if raising tuition midyear is legal). The vote will bring the total cost of a UC education to more than $10,000 per year for the first time ever.

Allison asks Samuels if the tuition hike is an act of war, of sorts, against poor students.

Next, a group of 145 evangelical, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christian leaders have signed a declaration saying they will not cooperate with laws that "could be used to compel their institutions to participate in abortions, or to bless or in any way recognize same-sex couples." They say they want to remind young people that abortion, homosexuality and religious freedom are still paramount issues. By that, the church means they want to remind young people to hate. You won’t believe some of the names that appear on the document of "good, Christian values."

Also, Christians sell "clever" t-shirts that secretly threaten President Obama.

Upcoming guests include: Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Johann Hari, Barbara Ehrenreich, and attorney Susan Burke.

Episode #59

All about the time Jamie saved author of Blackwater, Jeremy Scahill, from a crazy man.

But first: The Unfunny But Totally Real headlines: Learn about the world, while sitting on your ass, and feel like you're actually doing something. It'll only take two minutes, and then you’ll be able to sound smart to your apathetic, hipster douchebag friends.

As always: try to spot the Fox News headlines. Hidden somewhere within the Unfunny But Totally Real Headlines is a real headline from Fox. It's real – not made up – it's an actual headlines from Fox News.

This week, Jamie's brother Marc, along with Amnesty International, hosted an event at Columbia University. Jeremy Scahill, along with attorney Susan Burke, and moderator Scott Horton, participated in a discussion about military contractors.

The event went splendidly until a Conservative participated in the event the only way he knows how – by being a loud, crazy asshole.

If you haven't done so already, check out Jeremy Scahill’s Blackwater, the craziest true story you will ever read:http://blackwaterbook.com/buy.php. Also, read Jeremy's blog every day at Rebel Reports: http://rebelreports.com/.

Upcoming guests include Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and journalist Barbara Ehrenreich! Stay tuned!

Episode #56

Allison and Jamie welcome special guest, comic John Knefel, for the full hour! John is now a blogger at True/Slant (http://trueslant.com/johnknefel), and you should also friend him on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/johnknefel)

John has just returned from a half-awesome, half-disastrous trip to Argentina, and oh boy! Does he have stories! He had so many stories, in fact, that this week's Citizen Radio ran long, so our two-part interview with Anna Baltzer starts next week.

This week's topics include:

John talks about the Mets' anti-Palestinian party. Read about it here: http://trueslant.com/johnknefel/2009/11/06/meet-the-mets-who-are-assholes/

Organized sports

Bad news! Rep. Stupak owns your vagina! (or the vagina of your mom, sister, or friend) 64 Democrats voted for the Stupak amendment, and Allison investigates how many of those Democrats also voted for the Iraq war (which has killed many, many people). Read about it here: http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2009/11/08/house-representatives-vote-no-on-womens-rights-yes-for-war/

The healthcare bill passed! (but what's in it?)

Anthony Weiner abandons the single-payer healthcare model right when it matters the most

Worker-owned factories

John Knefel’s escapades in Argentina! (Socialism, murderous football fans, drugs, booze, a beautiful woman, and Esteban)

Tune in this weekend to hear interviews with very special guests Palestinian activist, Anna Baltzer and Firedoglake founder, Jane Hamsher!

Episode #55

Citizen Radio basks in the semi-awfulness of this week’s election results:

  • Shame in Maine: Prop 1 robs gay couples of the right to marriage and America once again treats gay people as second class citizens
  • Zaftig charlatan, Chris Christie, becomes governor of New Jersey. Jamie doesn’t react well.
  • Michael Bloomberg proves not even $100 million can buy you significant amounts of love, and also beautifully illustrates why America needs campaign finance reform

Yet there was also good news!

  • CA 10: Where Progressives reigned supreme (not that the media will tell you that)
  • NY 23: Victory for Bill Owens, the fairly unimpressive, moderate Democrat (who at least isn’t as crazy as Doug Hoffman!)
  • Medical marijuana expansion passed in Maine! They love weed, but apparently hate gay people

Also:

  • Allison fights war veterans on BBC radio – kind of – while Jamie stands in the cold
  • The Afghanistan pullout option: is it time for America to leave Afghanistan?
  • The Swine Flu, and the vaccine – what should you do? Is the vaccine safe? What role do factory farms play in the Swine Flu? Who profits from the vaccine?
  • Jamie tries to empathize with Conservatives
  • Citizen Radio explores why leaving human rights to statewide propositions may be a bad thing
  • All about Maher Arar, a Syrian-born Canadian citizen and victim of extraordinary rendition. Arar, an innocent man, was kidnapped by the United States and sent to Syria where he was horrifically tortured for an entire year.

Special guests Glenn Greenwald and Fisher Stevens

Allison and Jamie also discuss awful Joe Lieberman and J-Street.

He has also contributed to other newspapers and political news magazines, including The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times.

Greenwald is the author of three books, How Would a Patriot Act?, A Tragic Legacy, both New York Times bestsellers; and Great American Hypocrites.

He was selected, along with Democracy Now's Amy Goodman, as the recipient of the first annual Izzy Award by the Park Center for Independent Media, an award named after famed independent journalist I.F. "Izzy" Stone and devoted to rewarding excellence in independent journalism.

Glenn's blog is required reading for any self-respecting citizen, so check him out! http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/

Topics of discussion include:

Drug decriminalization
Liberals' refusal to criticize President Obama
Mainstream media
Blogs
FOX News, and
Chickenhawks (including our favorite armchair warrior, Joe Lieberman)

Next, Fisher Stevens is the award-winning director of The War Against War, a film tribute to UN Peacekeepers. Stevens is best known as a character actor, who played the doomed George Minkowski in ABC's LOST.

Stevens joins Citizens Radio to talk about the successes and failures of the "Blue Hats," the UN Peacekeepers and his near-death experience while filming The War Against War.

Upcoming guests include historian Howard Zinn and author, lecturer and activist for Palestinian rights, Anna Baltzer!

America's refusal to self-critique and reverse damaging behavior and how that applies to Zero Tolerance and Iran. Episode #52

Allison and Jamie interview comedian Brent Sullivan, mastermind of the hilarious show "Fag Life: A Conversation with Fred Phelps," which can be seen at the Upright Citizens' Brigade Theater in NYC November 4 and 11. Citizen Radio highly recommends the show. Reserve tickets here: http://newyork.ucbtheatre.com/shows/2156

Also, add Brent on Facebook! He's a funny political dude. What more can you ask for? http://www.facebook.com/brentjamessullivan

First up, the Unfunny But Totally Real Headlines! As always, this is where you can learn about the world, while sitting on your ass, and feel like you're actually doing something!

Next, the return of Democrat VS Republican! This week's topic: gay rights.

Comic Brent Sullivan discusses insane homophobe Fred Phelps, religious zealotry, what Jesus would think of gay people, the Supreme Court and "activist justices," how gay people can still be fired just for being gay in half the states of the country, same sex marriage, the poor organization skills of the gay rights community, the myth of gay promiscuity, and the hyper-sexualized gay pride parade (and why it's both a good and bad thing).

Miguel "the fucking" Fish

New hate mail!

The National Equality March

Lt. Dan Choi's speech against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

The gay witch hunt against Assistant Deputy Secretary at the Department of Education for the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, Kevin Jennings, and how the media is working with the right to hunt down and discredit an innocent man because he's gay

Yet another former Goldman Sachs executive, Adam Storch, is being appointed to a financial watchdog position

Brain boners!

A man in Texas is planning to camp on his Congress representative's lawn if Congress fails to extend unemployment benefits. Citizen Radio thinks this is a GREAT idea!

The positive thinking scam: why thinking positively distracts from the big problems like Corporatism, sexism, and hyper-Capitalism as described by author Barbara Ehrenreich in her new book "Bright-Sided."
